What is The Simba Club, I hear you ask?! Well, firstly I just made it up! But there absolutely should be a club! I’m talking about my new Simba mattress – honestly, the most luxurious item in my home! It’s been a total gamechanger for my back pain, my sleep quality & to be honest my mental health. Yes, I feel better about myself & my life for upgrading my mattress!

We all know that great sleep is one of the most foundational aspects for good health right? And we certainly all know how a disturbed night of broken sleep can make us feel the next day – groggy, anxious, overwhelmed, more irritable etc… Experts recommend that adults get a minimum of 7 hours of solid, undisturbed sleep every night, although this may vary slightly depending on your age & individual needs. As well as the total amount of sleep, the sleep quality & time spent in deep sleep & REM sleep are so important for your health. As well as the emotional effects of poor sleep it also affects a whole host of body functions – our brain & nervous system, our immune system, our cardiovascular system etc.

I’ve written in the past about my issues with sleep & being up multiple times during the night caring for my elderly animals. I currently only have my elderly 14.5 yr old dog left to care for & he gets medication twice during the night (11.30pm & 5am) so although I do still get broken sleep, I am getting a 5 hour stretch in the middle.

One of the top things you can do to improve your sleep is to invest in a good quality mattress. I finally took that advice after about 16 years of sleeping on a severely indented memory foam mattress! A high quality mattress, well maintained should last around 10 years, so I was well overdue a new one! My ex partner moved out 6 years ago & I have wanted to get a new mattress since then – on a woo-woo energetic level (did you know that people’s energy can stay in their belongings?!) as well as on a comfort level. I was never in the financial position to get a new mattress though until recently.

I got the Simba Hybrid Original mattress which is their original & best selling design. It features the highest number of micro-springs of the comfort range (which you can’t feel at all) which provide full body support & pressure relief. It also has an extra deep layer of Simbatex foam technology for optimum airflow, cushioning & heat dissipation.

And oh my goodness, what a difference a good quality mattress has made to my life – no understatement! My lower back is so happy! Honestly, I would wake up most mornings with such a stiff achy lower back & I just thought it was my age or I’d strained it… Now I wake up pain free – it feels amazing! I’m also definitely sleeping more deeply. When I do wake up I can’t quite believe I’m in my own bed, I think I’m in some luxury hotel!

Simba are the most 5 star rated mattress brand in the world & are a certified B corp. The Hybrid offers improved pressure relief & full body alignment. The tech is designed to create a “hugged” feeling in the upper layers & spinal support in the base layers, with adjustment for hips & shoulders. The mattress is classed as medium-firm & is probably a little firmer than my previous mattress but in a really nice supportive way. It’s 25cm deep, so a lot lower as well & easier to lift my doggy on & off! Yes, he sleeps on the bed with me & I think he rates his new mattress highly too 🙂 (see bonus picture of him at the bottom of the post!).

You all know that I’m a bit of a health freak & I was glad to know that the foam used is certified to contain no heavy metals & there is no animal testing. The mattress arrives rolled up & it’s simple to just unwrap it & unroll it straight onto your bed base. It says it can be used after 3-6 hours but may take 72 hours to fully rise. I got mine unrolled quite late in the day, around 5.30pm & there was still quite a strong smell when I went to bed around 4 hours later. I did check & this is not harmful or toxic & is just a natural off-gassing of the production process. However, it was gone by the following night. The mattress also has a handy removable knitted cover which can be removed for washing & can also be replaced.

I’ll need to rotate the mattress every month for the first 3 months & then every 3 months for it’s lifetime. They come with a 10 year guarantee as well as a 200 night trial. I definitely knew it was an amazing mattress after night 1!

Shall we also talk about the pillows? I am quite fussy when it comes to pillows. I like them to be quite flat & firm, but again, I had my previous pillow for a few years & was starting to get some neck pain overnight. I initially thought the Simba Hybrid pillows were too plump & big for me, but I decided to try one out… And OMG – seriously the best pillow I have ever used! It is a genius design too – filled with little cubes of firm blue foam as well as soft microfibre fill. There is a zip so the cubes can be removed to adjust the height & firmness to your liking. I haven’t removed any, it is just perfect for me as it is. The pillows also come with a luxurious removable quilted cover.

Honestly, I am so, so impressed with my new mattress (& pillows). I just wish I’d had the financial means to purchase one years ago! I was chatting to a friend & telling her about it & she said she doesn’t care about fancy TV’s or electronics, but one thing she must have & doesn’t mind paying for is a top quality mattress. I have to agree! It is certainly a wise investment if it will last you 10 years. Let me know if you agree too? And is anyone else in the Simba club?!
